How Much Do Outboards Weigh
Depending on the type of watercraft you have and the type of outboard motor you need, you can find outboards that range from as light as just 13 kg/29.5 lbs for a 2.3 hp engine to as heavy as 497kg/1094 lbs for a 627 hp motor!
To find the right size outboard for your boat size, the standard formula is to ensure that you have 5 hp per ton of boat weight. However, unless your activity or location is subject to hp restrictions, you may want to go for even more horsepower so that you’re equipped to take on obstacles like head winds and rough water.
Portable outboards generally range from 2-20 hp and can weigh anywhere from 13 kg/29.5 lbs to 50 kg/110 lbs.
Mid-size outboards are considered those that deliver 25-100 hp. Depending on the make and model, they generally range from about 70.5 kg/155 lbs to 163 kg/359 lbs.
You’ll find a much wider range of high-power outboard motors – those categorized between 115-627 hp. These motors can weigh as “little” as 217 kg/478 lbs for a 115 hp motor to as high as 497kg/1094 lbs for 627 hp.
