Step 1: Identify Your Engine's WOT RPM Range

Before you begin browsing different prop sizes, you need to look up your engine's wide-open throttle (WOT) RPM range. Every manufacturer establishes a specific maximum RPM range for their outboards, which you can easily find in your owner's manual. Your goal is to find a propeller that puts your motor at the exact midpoint of that target range when your boat is fully loaded with passengers, fuel, and gear.

Selecting a prop with too much pitch will lug the motor down, restricting your speed and straining internal components. Selecting a prop with too little pitch allows the engine to over-rev dangerously, which wastes fuel and can trigger your engine's rev-limiter. Use your manual's WOT spec as your primary benchmark.

Step 2: Decode Diameter and Pitch

Marine propellers feature two dimensions stamped directly on the hub barrel or blade root. For example, a prop stamped with "13 x 19" indicates a 13-inch diameter and a 19-inch pitch.

Understanding Diameter

The first number represents the diameter, which is the total distance across the circle formed by the tips of the spinning blades. A larger diameter catches more water, making it excellent for pushing heavy loads, pontoons, or slow-to-plane boats. A smaller diameter is suited for lighter hulls built for higher top-end speeds. Your motor's gearcase size limits your maximum diameter, so stick to the factory recommendations as a baseline.

Understanding Pitch

The second number represents the pitch, which measures the theoretical forward distance the prop travels through the water in one full rotation. Think of pitch like the gears in a truck. A lower pitch provides excellent acceleration and "hole-shot" power to get you up on plane quickly, but it limits your top speed. A higher pitch acts like overdrive, delivering a faster top-end speed at the expense of slower acceleration.

As a rule of thumb, every inch of pitch you add or subtract changes your maximum engine speed by roughly 150 to 200 RPM. If your motor is currently running below its target range, you need to drop down in pitch. If it’s over-revving, you need to step up.

Aluminum Props

Aluminum is the most common propeller material due to its affordability and lightweight design. These blades are designed to be somewhat forgiving, meaning if you strike a rock or a log, the aluminum blade will bend or break to protect the expensive shafts inside your gearcase.

Aluminum is perfect for casual lake cruising, shallow river fishing, and general use where budget is a top priority.

Stainless Steel Props

Stainless steel is roughly five times stronger than aluminum and can withstand minor impacts without distorting. Because the metal is so strong, engineers can design thinner, stiffer blades that don’t flex under heavy loads. This rigidity translates directly into sharper handling, better hole-shots, and improved fuel economy at cruising speeds.

If you regularly boat in deep, clean waters and want to maximize your engine's performance, stainless steel is well worth the upfront investment. If you navigate shallow, rocky rivers, stick with aluminum to save on potential replacement costs.

Step 5: Test on the Water

Install a prop based on your manufacturer's size guidelines, load your boat with your typical amount of gear and fuel, and head out to a safe stretch of water.

Bring the engine up to wide-open throttle and check your tachometer. If your RPMs match the exact middle of the factory recommendations, you’ve found the perfect fit. If you’re falling short, adjust your pitch dimensions accordingly until your engine can breathe easy under load.
